Herbsaint Original

Herbsaint liqueur D'Anis, a pastis, has been around for decades. The original formula was brought back to New Orleans from his service in France during World War One by Marion Legendre. Legendre tried to market the formula as an absinthe product in the early thirties, but since absinthe was banned in the US he was forced to change the name from Legendre Absinthe to Legendre Herbsaint, and the formula was changed to reflect this.

Over the years the formula was changed even more with a stronger star anise flavor, but the brand remained a mainstay in New Orleans culture, especially used in food by local chefs and the famous Sazerac Cocktail.

When absinthe recently became legal in the US again the original Legendre Herbsaint formula was resurrected from the Sazerac Company archives. SPAR was selected to design the label for this resurrected Herbsaint Original.

The decision was made early on to maintain close fidelity to the original package. A similar bottle was found, and the label was recreated. But since the somewhat crude illustration of the old label was no longer available, it was decided to recreate it but render it to give the label a more professional feel. The new illustration was done in the steel engraving style of the period but is more finished looking.
